Ammi

Ammi Green Mist goes by many names: Visnaga daucoides, toothpick weed, Bishop's flower, and Khella, but by any name it is simply a fancy carrot! Bred for pale yellow-green umbels of flowers and feathery, kelly-green foliage instead of a tasty taproot, this hardy annual member of the Apiaceae familiy is a good candidate for planting in most climate zones.

preparation

As a member of the carrot family, Ammi has a tap root and is sensitive to root binding. After hardening off, gently transplant your Ammi plug plants to avoid root excessive root disturbance and keep the soil moist until the plants are adjusted to their new bed. Overhead watering is key for all plug plants while they establish - their roots are too small to reach for water from drip irrigation at first. The best time of year to transplant Ammi plugs is a few weeks before your last outdoor frost in the spring: as a hardy annual, it can take some frost at transplant time and prefers a cool period to establish roots before flowering.

Growing

Plant Ammi in full sun. It is a long-day plant, and will be triggered to flower as hours of sunlight increase in the spring. The best soil type for Ammi is loose, well-draining, and of average fertility. Too much nitrogen and other nutrients will trigger the plant to produce lots of foliage, but very few flowers. After Ammi has established its root system, it is quite drought tolerant, as well as disease and insect resistant. You can expect Ammi to flower about 80 to 90 days after the plugs were transplanted, but time to bloom is always dependent on temperature and weather. Sunshine and warmth will speed up growth!

Cut Flower tips

To add Ammi to cut flower bouquets, harvest the stems when nearly all of the flowers on the inflorescence are open. Cutting too early risks wilting, and cutting too late means shedding pollen and a much shortened vase life.
