To stave off issues with fusarium, it is recommended that you not plant Aster in the same bed every year (every other year is fine). They grow pretty upright, so plant plugs 6" apart to prevent much flopping. You'll receive very tall stems if these are left unpinched. Pinching deeply 2 weeks after transplant (leaving 3-5 internodes) will promote branching. Callistephus chinensis establish during the long days of summer, and then initiate bud after the days begin to shorten. They don't mind some human intervention; stem length and flower size can be easily manipulated by pinching or not pinching, disbudding or not. If Aster Yellows disease is prominent in your area, you might not succeed with these. They can also be prone to fusarium, powdery milder, thrips, spider mites, blister beetles, and aphids. Remove any diseased plants from the garden right away, and ensure that the soil remains well drained.
