Gomphrena

Gomphrena also known as Globe Amaranth, is a tender annual from the Amaranthaceae family. G. globosa is a fantastic Summer bloom with sturdy but dainty stems with small, tufted ball-shaped blooms. Gomphrena comes in a variety of colors including white, magenta, electric purple, orange, red, pink & lilac. Gomphrena dries incredibly well, holding strong color in everlasting work. This little bop is the pop of color you're looking for in the heat of summer!

preparation

Gomphrena grows best during hot long days, under full sun and thrives in all zones that have strong summer heat. No netting or staking is required. Order these plugs to be shipped when the weather is warm. Once the soil temperature rises to 50 degrees F regularly & chance of frost is in the past, plant Gomphrena in loose, well drained soil spaced 8-12” apart from each other.

Growing

Pinching Gomphrena is not necessary for proper growth. Simply water regularly and expect blooms in 80-100 days from planting your plugs. Gomphrena are fairly resistant to pests, but the standard plant pests like aphids, thrips & spidermites may present themselves (we have solutions for this via our partners at Koppert US & Natural Enemies).

Cut Flower tips

Harvest the blooms when they are fully colored up and round in shape. You can always try a wiggle test, by giving the stem a shake to be sure the flower head isn't wobbly. If the stem is rigid, this is a good indication it is harvest-ready. Place in fresh, cool water with or without preservative - both ways are successful. Expect to enjoy your Gomphrena flowers for about 1 week. You can also dry immediately by hanging them upside down and slowly drying until crisp to the touch.
