Sedum
If you are seeking a plant that can handle the driest conditions, Sedum is for you. Sedum, also known as Stonecrop, is a classic perennial from the Crassulaceae family. The genus is Sedum and the species are spectabile, telephium, or a hybrid. Sedum is a resilient and versatile member of any garden. It grows in all types of soil and can be cut at any stage. You can cut it early when it’s green or “right on time” when in full bloom, and even better news - you can cut it as it fades. Sedum has a lovely bucolic and pastoral value so even if it’s a bit “overdue” it will thrive in any floral arrangement. It holds fantastically out of water. One can find Sedum in a range of purple, pink, lavender, peach and terracotta hues and it is a perfect addition to bulk up farmer’s market bouquets and late flowers in the garden.

preparation
As with all plugs, give them a few days to harden off and become accustomed to the natural weather and daylight changes outside of a greenhouse. Sedum must be planted after last frost and likes hot days above 75 Degrees F and warm nights above 60 Degrees F. They also like full sun and long days. Sedum can be planted in the Spring or Summer.

Growing
Sedum will fill pretty much any space you offer it. Plant Sedum with 12-24” between each plug in a place that will receive as much light as possible. No netting nor pinching is required. To get Sedum going - water well until established. Once established, Sedum doesn’t require as much water, so this is a good cultivar to plant in the driest part of your garden. While Sedum is quite pest resistant, there are risks of rotting roots, so be sure your soil drains well.

Cut Flower tips
One can harvest Sedum whenever one needs to add bulk to a floral arrangement! It can be cut early or late, before fluorescence or at it’s brightest moment, while perfectly in bloom or after it has faded a bit. Sedum is a welcome & flexible team player among other flowers that need a lot of attention and maintenance.
