Tweedia
If writing a love letter to a flower was appropriate, Tweedia is a splendid muse. Tweedia, or Oxypetalum coeruleum, is just a doll to grow. A tender perennial native to Florida, it is typically grown as an annual in cooler climates but will absolutely perennialize (and self-seed, watch out!) in warmer zones. Tweedia is in the milkweed family and produces a very sticky sap. Need a true blue, long lasting, perfectly soft cut flower? This is it.

preparation
Harden off and plant after all danger of frost has passed. Tweedia love fertile soil and deep watering. Do not let the plants dry out as plugs. Once established, Tweedia will thrive, particularly in warm conditions. Although it might perennialize in warmer areas, it can be grown as an annual across the US. It prefers average, well-drained soil. Irrigate regularly through the growing season for top quality plants.

Growing
Space plants anywhere from 6 to 12 inches apart to accommodate their growth habit. Tweedia is a day-neutral plant; daylength does not affect flowering. Plant in full sun to partial shade; at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily is ideal. Pinch active growth tip when plugs have reached 4-5 inches in height to encourage bushier growth and more blooms. Tweedia is adored by pollinators and humans alike.

Cut Flower tips
Harvest stems when the first flowers are fully open and some buds remain closed for optimal vase life. Tweedia are in the milkweed family and exude a thick, milky sap when cut which can irrigate sensitive skin. Place cut stems in clean water immediately. Use of floral preservatives can extend vase life. Some growers struggle with wilting stems after harvest and use a hot water treatment (placing cut stems in a couple inches of hot,but not boiling, water after harvest) or by treating the cut ends with a flame to help with hydration/conditioning. Some trials might be required to see what post-harvest care works best for you. Once conditioned, stems can last over two weeks in the vase with regularly changed water.
