Grow these "Hairy Balls" if you want to make your friends giggle (or call them "Balloon Plant" if you're less adventurous). Gomphocarpus physocarpus is a species of milkweed and can host monarch butterflies; it will always be the hot topic of conversation in your garden or flower field. Stalks produce clusters of star-shaped blooms in early summer, giving way to large, spiky green pods for arrangements and floral installations in late summer and autumn. Vase life is best when extra foliage is removed; like all milkweed, it oozes a milky sap when cut. These large plants easily reach 6 feet or higher in a single season, so give them lots of room, though extra support isn't required. Grow as an annual across the USA, or a tender perennial in the south.
