This exciting series is a true breakthrough in Campanula medium, developed by Fiona Noordam of Florique Breeding in the Netherlands. Florique varieties are the only Campanula medium propagated through tissue culture, an exacting technique that ensures each young plant retains all of the superior qualities of its parent.
As is true of many green flowers, the verdant stripes of Evergreen's cup-and-saucer shaped flowers are due to some of the petal tissue mutating to leaf tissue. This proportion of sturdy leaf tissue gives the plant incredible longevity, both in the garden and in the vase. The flower will start green, and then take on a flush of color around the edges. The accent color (Blue or lavender-hued Pearl) will deepen the longer they are left on the plant. The blossoms will last on the plant for up to a month before harvest.
Unlike the Champion series, these are true biennials, and need a consistently cold winter to flower properly. If you tend to have lots of oddly warm days throughout your winter, these may not be for you. Those odd warm days will undo the chilling received by the plant, and they will not flower in the spring.
Campanula Evergreen are best suited to the cold outer beds of high tunnel growers in the north. Ideally, growers will be able to vent their greenhouses on sunny winter days to maintain the chill in the air and the soil. Initial field testing suggests that these will also perform well in the open garden, especially in high snowfall areas. Repeated freezing and thawing without snow cover would not be appreciated by this series. Please read our detailed Growing Guide for thorough care instructions.
Campanula Evergreen is generally suitable for fall planting in USDA zones 5 and higher (unprotected), and Zones 5 and below with additional protection from a greenhouse, hoop house or frost cloth. These plants will grow as a rosette of leaves through the winter and will send up flower stalks in mid to late spring. This is strictly a guideline and we cannot guarantee winter survivability.
