Scabiosa atropurpurea are floriferous, seed-grown strains of Scabiosa, commonly called pincushion flower. Salmon Queen has delicate salmon-pink flowers and Black Knight is a deep, velvety burgundy. Both varieties make desirable cut flowers and attract pollinators to the garden.

Exactly What You’ll Receive

  • Scabiosa atropurpurea plug plants
  • 8 standard plug plants roughly 1" x 1" x 2"
  • 1 recycled & reusable mini greenhouse

When to Plant

  • Cool Soil (About 2 weeks before your 'last frost' date in spring)
  • Fall Planted (Approximately 6 weeks before your first frost date in the fall)

Scabiosa flower on long, whimsical stems which blow in the breeze. The clusters of flowers are spherical and flower from the outer rings into the center. Though atropurpurea share a similar flower head with Scabiosa Scoop, atropurpurea is more floriferous and the blooms are much smaller.

Black Knight and Salmon Queen are high quality cut flowers, and are are pollinator-friendly when left in the garden. Keep up with deadheading and harvesting for more blooms, or let the plant's changing textures add interest to landscape. Plant Scabiosa in well-draining soil and full sun for best results.

Scabiosa are generally suitable for fall planting in USDA zones 7 and higher (unprotected), and Zones 6 and below with additional protection from a greenhouse, hoop house or frost cloth. In warmer zones it will actively grow and flower in the early spring, and in cooler zones it will start flowering late spring and early summer. This is strictly a guideline and we cannot guarantee winter survivability.
